The Ministry of Water Resource and Sanitation has secured funds to roll out the construction of household, institutional and market toilets to improve Ghana’s rating internationally to improve sanitation.
Ending open defecation and providing access to safe drinking water are among the priorities of my outfit according to Honourable Kofi Adda, Minister of Sanitation and Water resources.
We want to get rid of open defecation entirely.’’ We have targeted one million toilets in the next couple of years. The Ministry has projected constructing about 20,000 toilets countrywide.

The African Development Bank, the Chinese Eximbank Bank as well as the World Bank are among some of the sources of development financing secured to undertake these projects.
The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) project as well as the GASSLIP (Greater Accra Sustainable Sanitation and Livelihood Project) and Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project (SRWSP) are among a few of the projects being pursued by the Ministry he added.
Considering that waste is now regarded as a resource, the processing of waste into by-products is high on the agenda of government Mr Adda stated.
The Ministry currently in construction with various investors to convert our waste into various values added products such as energy, compost fertilizer and recycled plastic and paper. This will reduce the final residue of waste to a minimum level which would not require huge landfill sites to dispose of waste.
The Ministry is on course to deliver rural water as well as to complete ongoing water treatment plants and commissioning them. Those to be commissioned include Cape Coast, Wa and Essakyi he noted.
Funds have also been sourced, waiting statutory approvals to undertake new projects to further expand access to water so as to deliver “water for all”.
