The Livelihood and Environment Ghana (LEG), a leading community and human rights-centered advocacy organization, has submitted copies of a comprehensive study Report to four presidential aspirants in Ghana regarding corporate human rights abuses in the country’s mining communities.
The Study, titled. ‘Corporate Human Rights Abuses in Mining Communities in Ghana’ investigates various human rights violations associated to the operations of multinational mining corporations. It also highlights the exploitative labour practices, environmental degradation, and the lack of proper compensation for affected communities.
The copies of the Reports were submitted to the National Campaign Secretariats of four presidential aspirants, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and the New Force.
Submitting the report to representatives of the aspirants at separate events in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Executive Director of LEG, Mr. Richard Adjei-Poku told representatives of the aspirants that the study exposes alarming patterns of corporate neglect, which are aggravating the poverty and suffering of people in mining communities.
Mr Adjei-Poku noted, “This study serves as a wake-up call to all political parties that human rights must be at the forefront of the national agenda,”
The submission of the report to aspirants comes at a critical time for Ghana, as the country prepares for the upcoming elections on Saturday, December7, 2024.
He urged the aspirants to address the negative social and environmental impacts of mining operations in the mining affected communities under review.
In response, the representatives of the president candidates welcomed the content of the report and expressed support for addressing the issue of corporate abuse in Ghana’s mining secror, while promising to review the study’s findings and integrate its recommendations into future policy frameworks.
They indicated further that, they were committed to fostering a mining sector that not only promotes economic growth but also safeguards the well-being and rights of all Ghanaians, especially those in affected communities.
LEG is a not-for-profit and non-governmental organization established in 2004 to promote environmental justice, community rights and sustainable livelihoods for marginalized people in society. LEG also engages with duty bearers on issues around mineral resource governance and policies to enhance sustainable development through research and advocacy.
