The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has urged that the upcoming December elections be conducted with transparency, fairness, and integrity.

Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony alongside the newly appointed executives of the GBA, Mrs Ghartey stressed the critical role of legal professionals in upholding democratic principles during election periods.

“This election should be handled in a transparent, free and fair manner,” she said.

She also commended lawyers for their contributions to educating the public on electoral matters, which she noted has been partly achieved through handling high-profile cases in the courts.

She cited the significance of the televised election petitions heard by the Supreme Court in 2013 and 2021, which helped inform the public about judicial processes and legal standings concerning electoral disputes.

The GBA President also acknowledged the media’s pivotal role in providing comprehensive coverage of court proceedings, enhancing public access to information and supporting transparency within the judicial system.

In addition, Mrs Ghartey urged lawyers to stay committed to environmental protection.

She expressed confidence that the collective efforts of legal professionals can lead to meaningful progress in safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.

“Our collective effort will definitely yield results as we remain resolute in our resolve not to shortchange ourselves where our environment is concerned,” she stated.
