Results from Nigeria’s tightly contested presidential election in Nigeria shows that Bola Tinubu has taken an early lead despite Lagos loss.

With official results declared in 10 out of 36 states, the ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu has 47% of the vote so far.

The main opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar has 27%.

Labour’s Peter Obi has 22%.

Mr Obi caused an upset by defeating Mr Tinubu in Lagos.

President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after two terms.

Mr Abubakar is a former vice president who has failed in previous presidential bids.

Mr Obi is running for the presidency for the first time.

He has promised to shake up Nigerian politics.

Mr Tinubu is seen as a political godfather. He now wants to be president.

  • With about a third of the 36 states officially declared, the ruling party’s Bola Tinubu has a strong lead
  • Main opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar is in the second spot, followed by Labour’s Peter Obi
  • Most of the results in so far are from Tinubu strongholds so it is too early to predict a winner
  • The parties of Mr Abubakar and Mr Obi have walked out of the venue where results are being announced
  • They allege the counting process lacks transparency, which the election commission rejects
  • Mr Tinubu has accepted defeat in Lagos to Mr Obi, which is an upset to his camp
  • Mr Abubakar caused an upset by winning Katsina, according to provisional results. This is the home state of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, who is backing Tinubu to win.
