President lists areas Russia-Ukraine crisis is affecting Ghana

Ghana’s leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says despite the far distance of the crisis in Eastern Europe, where Russia has launched an invasion on neighbours Ukraine, Ghana is feeling the effects.

He said the Russia-Ukraine crisis, which began on Thursday, February 24, has had an indirect impact on the economy of Ghana in one way or the other.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, March 30 in his state-of-the-nation address, President Akufo-Addo noted how imports like wheat flour and fertilizer have been affected while exports like manganese have stalled due to the crisis.

“The terrible events in Ukraine have a direct impact on our lives here in Ghana,”the president noted.

“Mr Speaker, 30 percent of our wheat flour and fertilizer imports come from Russia. Sixty percent of iron rods and other metal sheets are imported from Ukraine, and almost 20 percent of Ghana’s manganese is shipped to Ukraine.

“The bombs might be dropping on cities half a world away but they are hitting our pockets here in Ghana.”

He shied away from mentioning fuel, which has been the hardest hit commodity.

The President indicated that the government has managed to ensure that supply has not been disrupted.
