ABANTU for Development, a women’s rights advocacy Organization, with support from the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) will on Monday, November, 27, hold a press conference to ignite conversations ahead of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28),
The COP28 to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December 2023.
The Press Conference, to be held in Accra on the theme: ‘Pre-COP 28: Keep Your Promise Campaign’., is expected to push governments and climate-minded stakeholders to honour the promises they made during previous climate change Conferences.

It would also look at how issues of women, who are the most vulnerable, are addressed, in terms of their funding promises and commitment to the Global Goal on Adaptation.
In an invitation letter to the media ABANTU stated that In 2015, the Paris Agreement (in Article 7.1) established the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) with the aim to “enhance adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change.
According to the organization, CoP27 saw significant progress on adaptation, with governments agreeing on the way to move forward on the GGA, which is expected to conclude at CoP28 and inform the first Global Stocktake, improving resilience amongst the most vulnerable.
In addition, COP28 is the deadline for parties to agree on financial arrangements for loss and damage. The COP27 Presidency issued the draft text on November 19, 2022, proposing the establishment of a loss and damage finance facility with the specifics to be worked out and completed in COP 28.
The presidency stated that it has decided to establish new funding arrangements for assisting developing countries in responding to loss and damage.
The above move according to ABANTU presents a key entry point for African states and negotiators, including Ghana, to collectively agree on their demands, campaign, and strategically position itself towards CoP 28, to ensure that the North is held accountable and that, issues of women, who are the most vulnerable, are addressed, in terms of their funding promises and commitment to the GGA.
Experts have noted that this year’s UN climate change conference, COP28, is a pivotal opportunity to correct course and accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis.
COP28 is where the world will take stock of progress on the Paris Agreement – the landmark climate treaty concluded in 2015 – and chart a course of action to dramatically reduce emissions and protect lives and livelihoods.
The science is clear: to preserve a livable climate, the production of coal, oil, and gas must rapidly decline, and global renewable power capacity – including wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal energy – needs to triple by 2030. At the same time, financing for adaptation and investments in climate resilience need a quantum leap.
COP28 brings together leaders from governments, businesses, NGOs, and civil society to find concrete solutions to the defining issue of our time.
