ABANTU calls for stronger links between the state and private actors

A development consultant, Mr Baba Tuahiru has called for a stronger collaboration between state actors and private entities to ensure sustainable climate change funding.

He made this remarks at a workshop organised by ABANTU for Development on the theme: ‘Influencing Public and Private Sources of Financing for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation in the country.’

Finance has been and remains the life wire of the efforts to manage the climate change phenomena. Much as some amount of funds has been mobilized through various sources and are available to developing countries and countries with economies in transition to meet the objectives of the international environmental conventions and agreements, there are still a lot of gaps in terms of the adequacy of climate funding mobilized so far.

He said there is the need for CSOs to find ways of engage the government to create an enabling environment to motivate the private sector to get involved in climate change financing.

“For instance, if you go to the Northern Region and other parts of the country, there are a number of private sector organisations that are already implementing climate change adaptation projects and providing essential information about the weather.

It is therefore critical for civil society to strengthen their own capacity in engaging actively with policy makers on issues of climate change finance to promote accountability and transparency.
