AGES provides Amanchiaa Community a mechanized Borehole

Advocacy for Gender, Environment and Social Initiatives (AGES), a Kumasi-based Women-led Non-Governmental Organization is putting in place amechanized borehole for residents of Amanchiaa communityin the Atwima Nnwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The borehole, which is currently in its final stages of construction is being financiallysupported by the Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA).

 The gesture, according to AGES, is part of its contribution to complement the effort of the government of Ghana to combat the coronavirus pandemic.The Coronavirus pandemic which demands regular cleaning, washing, hand washing and general sanitation of environment has made the water situation worse in the area.

Amanchiaa is a farming community with a population of about 3,000 and about6 kilometers away from Nkawie the municipal capital of the AtwimaNnwabiagya Municipal Assembly.

The Community over the years have no potable drinking water as a result of mining activities which has polluted most of the water-bodies in the area. Women and School children have to travel long distances in search of water.

In order to alleviate the sufferings of women and Children who are mostly affected when waterscarcity becomesdominant, AGES saidit sought financial support from GAGGA to provide a mechanized borehole for the Amanchiaa Community.

Residents of Amanchiaa Community are very excited about the development and are waiting in anticipation for the completion and subsequent commissioning of the mechanized Borehole.

 AGES is not-for-profit and non-governmental women organization. The Organization has since its formation in 2015 been working vigorously to achieve its objectives. In 2018, AGES together with CHRAJ’s Ashanti Regional Head office and the Gender Unit of the Ghana Education Service Nkawie District mounted a campaign against sexual abuse of school girls and abuse of women’s rights by some mining workers in Ghana.

AGES has also built the capacity of mining affected communities in both Amansie West District and Atwima Nnwabiagya Municipality on issues concerning compensation and resettlement with support from Global Greengrants Fund. 

Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA) is a multi-actor network that is active from local to international levels, supporting local movements fighting for women’s rights and environmental justice and further amplifying local women’s struggles and solution.
