World Vision International Ghana (WVIG) has begun distributing relief items to flood victims in the Northern Region.
In all, WVIG is targeting to present 1,000 pieces of 30 litre water storage containers, 1,000 pieces of 20 litre buckets for water purification, 1000 sieving mesh, 2,251 laundry and bathing soaps and 331,700 P&G water purifiers.
This intervention, which forms part of WVIG’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) progamme, is in response to the call by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support people affected by floods as a result of the spillage of the Bagre Dam and heavy rains.
Mr Samuel Gmalu, Humanitarian Emergency Affairs and Security Manager of WVIG, presented the first batch of the items including 30 litre water storage containers, 20 litre buckets for water purification, sieving mesh, laundry and bathing soaps and P&G water purifiers to the affected people in the Nanton District.
The flood victims were from communities including Nanton Kurugu, Kpano, and Gbumgbum.
Assessments by WVIG together with other partners confirmed that the spillage of the Bagre Dam last month, coupled with heavy rains in the region had resulted in over 35 deaths and displaced more than 52,000 people, destroyed a number of houses, and roads and contaminated domestic water sources as well as an estimated 10,000 hectares of farmlands.
Mr Gmalu said WVIG is aiming to repair and maintain 250 boreholes to provide clean and safe water to the victims since many of the wells and boreholes had submerged in the floods.
He said there is the need for other stakeholders to also take steps to get the flood victims especially children, some form of relief to enable them recover from the effects of the disaster.
Mr Wumbei Zakaria, Coordinating Director of the Nanton District, commended WVIG for its efforts at contributing to the sustainable well-being of people especially the most vulnerable in the region.
Mr Zakaria appealed for support from government and other development partners since the Assembly is new and lacked the resources needed to operate efficiently.
Mr Mohammed Musah Sulemana, Nanton District NADMO Director, said NADMO would continue to collaborate with development partners to solicit support for the flood victims.
Beneficiaries thanked WVIG for the intervention and appealed for more support from government to ameliorate their plight.
