Angela Merkel has been the Chancellor of the German Government for 12 years. On 24.09.2017 she and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won the elections for the forth time in a row.

I as a young person living in Germany have never seen Angela Merkel in real life, because German politicians aren’t likely to step out in public. But because of the media reports I know that she is good for Germany, which is why she was reelected. With her moderate but authoritarian charisma she has guided Germany unerring through any crisis which made her being called “Mutti Merkel” (Mommy Merkel) by the vernacular.

Immigration

For example during the recent refugee crisis in the European Union (EU). In 2015, when the crisis began, 557.960 refugees have arrived to the EU causing a huge organizational problem in may countries. Merkel and her government however quickly established two new laws, called asylum package I and II in October and November of the same year.

The laws tightened the conditions for refugee coming from so called “safe countries of origin”, which means that their deportation back to their home country can be performed easier. But they also improved the conditions for refugees with a chance to stay in Germany by allowing them to work three months after their application for asylum, extending their stay in refugee centers and introducing a new ID and data base to register all the asylum seekers.

These legal renovations where helpful in 2016 when the highest amount of refugees ever came to the EU (988.00) because Germany has taken two thirds of them, 658.667, 2.581 of them were Ghanaians.

Women Quote

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Government also established a law in 2015 that is supposed to support the gender equality in leading positions. The law dictates corporations quoted on the stock exchange to have 30% women in their board of management.

Within her 12 years as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Mommy Merkel has achieved a lot for the country even though politics were her second career choice.

Merkel, who was born in 1954 in the North of Germany, first studied physics from 1973 to 1978 got her dissertation in 1986.

She left the nature sciences and started her political career in 1989 when joining the Democratic Decampment in 1989 and CDU in 1990.

From 1991 to 1994 she has been the Minister for Women and Youth and 1994 to 1998 for Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Reactor Safety.

On 22.11.2005, with 35,2% of the votes, she was elected the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany  which she is since then. She and her Party represent the conservative voices in the House of German Parliament but within her regency she moved the party more in the middle for example because of her enacting the new laws regarding immigration and women quote.
