Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has begun engaging his former rivals in the party’s presidential primaries, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, as part of efforts to reposition the party for the 2028 general elections.

The development was disclosed by senior aide and Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku during an interview on Peace FM.

According to him, the outreach forms part of a broader strategy to unify the party following a fiercely contested primary.

Dr Bawumia was re-elected on January 31, 2026, to lead the NPP into the 2028 polls, defeating Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr Bryan Acheampong.

While the results were widely accepted by party delegates, the intensity of the contest raised concerns about internal divisions and the need to rebuild relationships ahead of the next election cycle.

Sammi Awuku revealed that Dr Bawumia has already held a private meeting with Kennedy Agyapong, describing it as constructive and forward-looking.

“He (Dr Bawumia) has made a personal and private visit to his brother Kennedy Agyapong. They had extensive conversations on how the party can unite in the aftermath of the primaries ahead of 2028,” he said.

“He reported to us that he left the meeting very satisfied, with assurances that Kennedy Agyapong will support him.”

Sammi Awuku added that similar engagements have been held with the other former contenders, all of whom have given comparable assurances of support.

He emphasised that the initiative is aimed at consolidating party unity and strengthening the NPP’s chances in the 2028 elections.
